SOPH hosted a seminar on International Perspectives on the Role of Embedded Research in Health Systems on 23 November 2017. Embedded research is increasingly recognized as key to the progressive realisation of equity and social justice in health systems. Just what is embedded research, how is it practised and through what institutional mechanisms were questions the seminar sought to address.
Prof Uta Lehmann opened the seminar welcoming participants and distinguished pannel. She highlighted how seminar came out of recent collaboration between UWC, UMEA, and UCT in the area of Health Policy and Systems Research. She emphasized how bringing different actors together to set research agendas is a powerful part of research co-production, an important form of knowledge generation in Embedded Research.
Seminar was facilitated by Dr Tracey Naledi, Chief Director, Western Cape Department of Health. Associate Professor Jill Olivier (Health Policy and Systems Research Division, UCT) kicked off seminar by delivering a presentaton mapping multiple perspectives and practices of Embedded Research.
This was followed by a distinguished international panel discussing the role of Embedded Research in Health Systems, and institutional mechanisms mediating its practice. Panellists include diverse international panel (deans, government directors, advisors, activists, professors):
