Bonnie joined the School of Public Health in June 2025 as an Affiliate Researcher with the Imarisha consortium, examining gendered workplace violence in primary healthcare across South Africa, Burkina Faso, and Tanzania.

She is a participatory action researcher with deep commitments to stakeholder engagement and community-centred research approaches. Her PhD aims to use media and art-based participatory approaches to explore how diverse stakeholders and sectors contextualise and address gendered workplace violence.

Imarisha: Strengthening PHC by addressing gendered workplace violence

This consortium aims to fill an urgent and widespread gap in understanding and addressing workplace violence and its gendered dimensions experienced by the PHC workforce in three countries— Burkina Faso, South Africa and Tanzania—where high proportions of women work as PHC health workers and have reported high levels of violence. Imarisha is a Swahili word meaning ‘to strengthen’
