The Annual Lecture series honours late Emeritus Prof David Sanders’ legacy as founder of the SOPH and recognises his considerable contributions to UWC and to the field of public health, both locally and internationally. This year we are excited to host Professor Fran Baum, a long-time activist academic, friend and colleague, who will deliver the lecture, ‘The Struggle for health and equity continued’.
We are continuously reminded of David’s passion, intellect and social justice action, and all these attributes were captured in his acclaimed book The Struggle for Health: Medicine and the Politics of Underdevelopment. At the time of David’s passing he was working on an updated edition of this influential book. Since his untimely passing, and with the direction of Sue Fawcus, co-authorship of Wim de Ceukelaire and Barbara Hutton together with colleagues from the People’s Health Movement (PHM), and the considerable support provided by the UWC_ SOPH, the book was completed.
Therefore, accompanying the Annual Lecture we will also celebrate the launch of The Struggle for Health: 2nd Edition (Oxford University Press, 2023) which ‘presents a strengthened call to action, building upon the original work and advocating for systemic changes to ensure justice and equity in health for all’
