The PhD induction series took place from February 4 to March 9, 2026. The 2026 cohort includes nineteen pre-doc and doctoral fellows. The series consists of six two-hour-long thematic sessions facilitated by the SOPH PhD support team, featuring current and former students. The thematic sessions blended live virtual engagement (a combination of inputs and participatory activities) with asynchronous preparatory tasks- which all help to facilitate a smooth transition into the PhD programme, clarify expectations, introduce fellows to resources and spaces of peer engagement and learning, and foster a sense of belonging and direction.
Fellows began by reflecting on what pursuing a PhD means, articulating their expectations and questions, and inquiring how the programme could best support their journey. Many used terms like transformation, growth, empowerment, community, networking, and expertise to characterise their PhD journey. In addition to the thematic sessions, participants had the opportunity to take a week-long qualitative or quantitative research methods course and attend a PhD seminar with current students on navigating the early stages of a PhD.

2026 PhD induction participants and programme
Fellows appreciated the induction programme, the broad range of topics covered, the participatory approach, and the opportunity to engage with academics, current students, and alumni. They also provided valuable suggestions for ongoing engagement.
As a key component of the PhD Support Programme, the PhD induction series facilitates a smooth transition into the PhD programme, clarifies expectations, introduces fellows to resources, peer engagement, and learning spaces, and fosters a sense of belonging and direction.
The PhD Support Programme
Over the years, the PhD support programme has benefited from funding from several sources, including the Belgian Development Cooperation through the Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine, the South African Medical Research Council, and the South African National Research Foundation through the South African Research Chairs Initiative.
