Climate Change and Health for Frontline Health Workers

The School of Public Health (SOPH) at the University of the Western Cape, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Western Cape Government, invites you to this 5-day in-person short-course.

This short course is targeted at frontline health workers, including Environmental Health Practitioners / Officers (EHPs), Air Quality Officers, Nurses, other Allied Health Workers, NGO workers interfacing with communities, and UWC students interested in climate change impacts on health.

The course will be run with three days of interactive classroom sessions, and two days of field visits to monitoring and innovation sites close to Cape Town.

Overall course objectives:

To enhance the knowledge of frontline health workers, EHPs, authorities and others, concerning the climate crisis and its impact on health, equip them with skills to identify and respond to climate change risks and advocate for climate action within their institutions, communities, and professional domains.

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Understanding climate change and air pollution
  • Impact of climate change on human health
  • Risks and vulnerability to climate change
  • Mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change
  • Role of health workers, EHPs and authorities in addressing climate change risks and impacts

 

CPD Accredited with the HPCSA.
