Title
Participatory systems analysis tools for improved health systems performance.
Target audience
Health Managers at different levels in the public, NGOs and private sector, front line workers, Pharmacy and allied health leaders, environmental health workers, and other health systems players at district and facility levels.
Purpose/rationale
To empower health managers and health professionals with skills to holistically analyse complex issues in their health system and identify key leverage points for intervention for an effective health system response.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand key concepts of complex health systems
  • Know a range of health systems analysis tools/methodologies
  • Understand how to conduct and facilitate analysis of complex health issues using the various tools and methodologies presented to them
  •  Interpret information generated using these tools/methodologies and identify key leverage points for intervention to strengthen their health systems

Session 1 – 29th September 2021: Introduction to complex health systems and various tools for analysing complex health systems

Session 2 – 20th October 2021: Group Model Building methodology using Causal loop diagrams: Case studies from

  1. Cote D’Ivoire (a case of HIV service provision following the disputed presidential election of 2010)
  2. Nigeria (a case study in the Yobe State, in response to the Boko Haram insurgency between 2011 and 2014)
  3. South Africa (a case of a maternal health service provision in Eastern Cape, South Africa addressing a context of chronic health systems adversity).

Session 3 – 10th November 2021 : Social Network Analysis: Case studies on

  1. Strengthening collaboration for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health services in Mpumalanga Province and
  2. assessing patterns of supervisory relationships of ward-based outreach teams in North West province, South Africa

1 hour 30 minutes sessions contact hours starting at 13h00
